UK Government raises terror threat level to 'Severe'

The UK Home Office has elevated the terrorist threat level from 'substantial' to 'severe', indicating that the risk of a terrorist attack is highly likely.

The Home Secretary Alan Johnson announced that the Joint Terrorist Analysis Centre (JTAC) had made the change today (Friday 22 January 2010), but stated that "there is no intelligence to suggest that an attack is imminent".  This change comes ahead of international talks to be hosted in London on the how to deal with the threat from Middle Eastern terrorism and four weeks after the failed bomb attempt on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on 25 December 2009 by a 23 year old Yemeni trained Nigerian man.
